Rushawn Patterson, also known as ‘Chizzie,’ was charged with the untimely demise of social media influencer Aneka ‘Slickianna’ Townsend in November 2022. Townsend’s lifeless body was discovered floating in the sea near Reading, St. James, on October 21, 2022. A post-mortem examination revealed that she had been strangled.
Investigations revealed that Townsend had traveled from Kingston to Montego Bay on October 20, 2022, where she met with Patterson. The two visited a restaurant in Hanover before heading to a guest house in St. James. Reports suggest that an argument ensued, during which Patterson allegedly strangled Townsend and disposed of her body.
Bail Applications and Court Rulings
Patterson was denied bail multiple times. His first bail application was rejected on March 21, 2023, by High Court Justice Andrea Thomas. Another attempt to secure bail was denied on October 4, 2023. However, in September 2024, after nearly two years in custody, he was finally granted bail.
Legal Proceedings and Delays
The case has faced numerous delays since Patterson’s arrest. In 2024, the trial was repeatedly postponed, with an October hearing delayed due to an outstanding DNA report. The case was then pushed back further to March 19, 2025.
In January 2025, the proceedings faced another setback when the St. James Circuit Court halted the trial to allow Patterson to receive medical attention. Later that month, the court postponed the trial once again, setting a new date for October 15, 2025, due to incomplete files.
Tragic Turn of Events
On February 25, 2025, just months before his scheduled court appearance, Patterson was fatally shot by police during an incident. His death raises significant questions about the future of the case and what this means for justice in Townsend’s murder.
The case of Aneka ‘Slickianna’ Townsend remains one of the most high-profile criminal matters in recent Jamaican history, sparking national discussions on violence, justice, and delays in the legal system.
